It is Easter weekend and there are so many family friendly activities to do in Columbia. We made our way over to The Bass Pro Shop for their Easter egg hunt. They hid the eggs throughout the store amongst the merchandise. They had employees/volunteers everywhere re-hiding the eggs as you walked by! They kept an eye out for the little guys who just couldn't find an egg. You could find 5 eggs, then go to the back of the store to trade them in for 5 pieces of candy. For the older child, this kind of Easter Egg hunt might be depressing, but for the younger child, this was perfect.
After the cash in on candy, they had a cute craft foam project the kids could each do. Then we went out onto their dock and devoured our candy. The day was perfect.

Sleeping Porter
April 23, 2011
It was Saturday mid-morning and Porter went into his room to play for a while. Derek and I were fast at work trying to get things ready for our move. I hadn't heard from Porter in a while, so I went in to check on him and this is how I found him. Fast asleep on the floor! He LOVES his nite nite blanket! He's ALL cuddles if you're holding it too! So much for nap time.

Porter is WALKING!
April 15, 2011
i went to a playdate today. There were two other moms there and one of them just randomly bent over and stood Porter up to showed him where mom was. 5 minutes later, he was walking! Simple as that! Wow! It all happened so fast and so naturally. (If only it would have happened at the age of 12 months instead of 16!) When Derek came home from work I said, "Quick! Get the camera out and film some of his crawls because they are nearly gone!" So we did, and he did crawl at first, but most of this video are some of Porter's very first steps!

Shooting kisses
April 11, 2011
We have a family rule in our home that we shoot KISSES not BULLETS. With three boys in the family, we're hoping this rule sticks for as long as possible!
Every morning as dad leaves for work, the kids RACE to the window to catch him as he pulls out of the garage. They peg the glass with their shooting kisses in hopes that dad will catch some of them and perhaps even shoot back at them.
We loves you so much dad! We miss you already and will have more kisses for you when you come home!

Life Savers and Tornados
March 4, 2011
Since Tanner's birthday is in the summertime, we picked March 4th to celebrate. Exactly 4 months earlier. (The house is on the market and this was a great distraction from the stress of keeping things immaculate.)
Tanner loves life savers on his cupcakes!
He loved sharing his life savers and cupcakes with his classmates.
Afterwards the kids sat around and visited. It was an extra treat to have Tanner's siblings there. The girls in the class just couldn't keep their hands off the baby. They are all just mothers in training!
Since Tanner's party was at the end of the day, and we were all done with the party, his teacher said we could take off a few minutes early. I grabbed my kids and Noah (carpool/neighbor) to head out to the car. I almost NEVER bring all of my kids with me when I go to his school, but for some reason, this particular day I had decided to. At the other end of the school in the auditorium there was an assembly going on. There were lots of parents in the building attending it and the parking lot was full. So I had ended up parking out on the main highway when I arrived. As we were about to leave, I could see it was bucketing rain something fierce outside. I decided I would take the kids to the library and leave them there, then run and get my car and park it just outside the library so I wouldn't have to haul 5 kids in the pouring down rain out to the busy highway. Just as I arrived at the library, the tornado sirens went off. There are so many rings and bells that happen in a school building and we were right at the end of a school day, so at first, I didn't think much of it. That is, until I saw the whites of Noah's eyes. He was wearing his cool right on his shoulders, but inside he was terrified. I looked out the library door and saw literally half the school and their parents filing out of the assembly and heading for shelter in classrooms.
Still deciding how I should respond to this, Noah was getting increasingly nervous. I made him look me in the eyes and then I promised him I'd take care of him. I'd like to say my kids were terrified too, but they were just so happy-go-lucky about the whole thing, none of it seemed to phase them. Probably because they are all too small or probably because mom was there. Mom is the comforter.
Just then, a teacher stuck her head in the door of the library and noticed that we were standing there. "You need a safe room to go to." she kind of stated/asked me. She didn't stop to wait for me to respond. She stuck her head back out into the hallway to ask someone something, then turned back to me and told me Mrs. Horn's room was designated as a "safe room". Fantastic. I knew right where that was, it was Tanner's classroom! The big task though was directing my 5 children through the hallways without getting clobbered by all the other kids and adults who were rushing by.
Eventually, we made it into Mrs. Horn's room. The 1st graders had been cuddled up in the far corner together and several classrooms of 5th graders were filing in. Each child knew exactly what to do. They had rehearsed this several times before. Kneel down, get under a table if you can. Put your head to the floor and cover it with your hands. Hold still, keep quiet, and wait out the storm. But somehow, a rehearsal is much different than the real thing.
I saw those children all huddled with their heads under their hands and tables. I watched the teachers doing all they could to protect the children. And I cried. I just stood there and cried. It touched my heart to see these beautiful children having to protect themselves. How well prepared everyone was. How scary. How precious are these children.
The tornado did not go near the school thankfully, and soon the rain let up and we were on our way. I did still use the library route to load the kids, which I think was good for Noah to go back there and not be afraid anymore. I am sure he hugged his mom for a long time that evening. I hugged my kids too.
Interesting though, this is the year for tornadoes. Just a week or so after this event at Tanner's school Joplin got hit. Even the MU hospital started taking them more seriously. Derek spent some time in the basement while the sirens were ringing.
I wonder what Tanner will remember most. The life savers or the tornadoes?
UPDATE: 2-23-2012. It's been a year now. I asked Tanner tonight at dinner what he remembered about the day we celebrated his birthday at school. "The six spankings," he said. Next came the cupcakes. Chocolate with white frosting. Correct! Though he did not include life savers as part of the memory. After giving him some clues, he did remember all the events of they day. There's a smile on his face as he reminisces. No terror of tornadoes.

Oops! Too much love!
Here is a short video of Tanner's classmates singing "Happy Birthday" to him and their tradition to wait until the birthday child takes his first bite before everyone dives in. We've got a similar tradition in our own home. Love it!Since Tanner's party was at the end of the day, and we were all done with the party, his teacher said we could take off a few minutes early. MU Gymnastics
February 11, 2011
We had such a wonderful time last year going to the MU women's gymnastics meet that we wanted to go again this year. This time we brought Emma with us! Kate took Tanner and he and Noah had a late night together while Lexie and Emma were in their element at the Hearnes Center.
I didn't get as many cool shots this year as you can see, I had my hands full! But it was fun to go and just cheer them on!

Missouri snow
February 1, 2011
When Derek came to Columbia, Missouri back in 2007 to interview for the residency position here he happened to arrive just after they had received 18 inches of snow. I remember talking with him on the phone and hearing about how beautiful it was there with all the snow.
Our first three winters have been nowhere close to that amount. Not even cumulative! I remember last winter well. We got 4 dustings of about 1/4 of an inch. Not even enough to make a snowball. We just kept hoping though since we knew of those 18 inches. Finally, our 4th and last winter in Missouri we got snow! And boy did we get snow!
February 2, 2011
The next day, we went out to work and play in the snow. We have several widows on our street, so Tanner and Derek had some good fun shoveling their driveways. It happened also that we aquired one more widow this day. Our dear neighbor, Steve passed away in the middle of our snow storm. All the neighbors gathered together to shovel her walks and driveway so that an ambulance could get in to take his body to the morgue.

Porter
January 3, 2011
Porter is just the sweetest, happiest baby. This is the most mischief he gets into these days. Which isn't much considering I have to open the Tupperware cupboard door for him! We're so very grateful you're part of our family Porter! You are such a joy to us! We love you!

Ice Skating Adventure
December 28, 2010
Columbia, Missouri does not have a single ice rink. There's one down in Jefferson City, but that is a 40+ min drive. While we were in Utah, we took advantage of the cute one they have in downtown Salt Lake City. We also took advantage of Grandma and Aunt Rosa. With four kids, we needed four adults to make this happen! I was terribly nervous about how we were going to pull this off. It was, after all, our FIRST time ice skating as a family!
When we got to the rink and started to put on our skates, we put the kid's skates on first. Soon they were done and we adults still needed to put ours on. I was pretty impressed how they just hopped off the bench and started to walk on their skates. I thought they would be falling all over their feet, but they didn't.
They must have been so excited about ice skating because while we were all in the middle of trying to get our skates on, and Tanner and Lexie were just standing there with theirs already on, he asked one of the adults in our group what he needed to do next. (He did not ask this of me because I would never have given this answer, but it was awesome nonetheless.) The reply was, "go get on the ice!" So they did! They didn't wait for someone to hold their hand or anything, they just jumped right in and went for it. The over protective mom in me was shocked and super impressed. My kids are definitely tougher than I give them credit for.
Grandma, bless her heart spent most of her time holding Porter while Derek, Rosa and I tag teamed Tanner, Lexie and Colin.
Derek was the hero of the day for Lexie. She kind of cried her way around the rink the first two times. Then Derek took a look at her skates and decided to switch them out. As soon as he got her situated with different skates, she was a happy camper. She went right out, grabbed the railing, found a friend and went around and around the rink. She had a great time!
Once the kids were all tuckered out, we left them with grandma and some hot chocolate (which you can see all over Colin's face!). Derek and I went out for a mini "date" on the ice. The last time we went ice skating was when we were dating, so this brought back some fond memories.
In all, it was a grand time. The kids loved it. I wish we had more opportunities to ice skate. I can see the kids really picking up on it if they had the exposure. I'm so grateful we took the time to create this memory! Thank you Grandma and Aunt Rosa for helping us! You made the memory all the more sweet!

Ellingson family fun
December 27, 2010
We got together a couple of days later with the Ellingson brothers. First things first: Grandpa time!
Here are a bunch of the grandkids! We were really missing Jonathan and Eleanor's kids. They have 4 and one due any day. This couch would have been really full with them all there! And the cousin time would have been all the more fun!
It didn't take us long to kiss these kiddos good night and put them to bed so the real fun could begin!
SUSHI! We had some expert sushi makers with us here and they made some incredible dishes. Watching the process was fascinating too!
Here are 7 of the 8 brothers! Thanks guys for a great time! For me, tonight was one of the best times I have had with all the brothers and their spouses. They are a great group with some fun whit and a love of cooking. I'm so blessed to be part of this family!
